Rolling Stock:

Traction and rolling stock technicians work on a variety of rail vehicles including locomotives, units, carriages and wagons. They assist with design and also with undertaking installations, modifications and maintenance. They also are responsible for ensuring that all parts of the train are ready for service and that they will operate safely and efficiently; meeting company and legal standards and regulations.

Control systems:

Signallers are responsible for management the safe movement of trains around the UK. There are about 6000 signallers who work in signal boxes and control rooms and they use around 40000 signals to control how every train moves around its set route. Signallers may also control the direction of trains by moving the railway ‘points’ which determine on which track a train runs.

• One junior research fellow in the field of transport infrastructure finance

Under the Research Centre on Commodity Flows, the Department’s staff members group their transport-economic as well as infrastructure-related expertise in order to support the Flemish mobility and logistics policy. The Research Centre reports to the Flemish Ministry of Mobility and Public Works, and allows a group of young researchers to prepare a Ph.D in selected commodity transport topics.
